Toddler proof light switch

Min can't resist staying up until midnight to play because she knows how to turn the light on, and refuses to turn it off. The phase of her playing then cleaning up her room and then turning the light off and then tucking herself in bed was way too short. Like 3 days. Often she will wake up at 2 am to go potty and then play for a few hours. Weve looked all over for baby proof light switch covers and there isnt anything we are too impressed by. I found a DIY blog post and so we tried that, although it was still pretty easy for min to turn the light on. This is what we came up with.

Take a shampoo bottle. Cut off the top. Carefully cut a rectangle out of the back for the light switch to fit into. Figure out where the screw holes should go. Poke smaller holes on the back side. Poke holes on the front side big enough to fit your screwdriver through to screw the shampoo bottle into place. Make sure the opening is facing up and not down.

Also this only works if you don't have anything in the room to stand on--of course Maren figured it out in one day. So she doesn't get to have her baby doll crib in her room at night.

  1. We take out the light bulb! Nice work though.

  2. Mark took the light bulbs out back in the summer but during the winter I want to be able to turn the lights on when it's so dark in there during the day. Also, since Maren was potty training and waking up at night to use the potty in her room, I wanted to be able to see what I was doing and make sure there weren't any messes on the floor!

  3. Hey Holly- I enjoy your blogs! I actually have something to contribute, so I thought I would comment. Logan and I switch the breaker for the kids room when we have light switch troubles. It works great. It is simple to switch it back, and it works like a charm.
